Wizards in the Mist: Curating Luxury and Raw Magic in Meghalaya

There is a distinct, almost cinematic magic that descends upon Meghalaya just before the monsoons arrive. The air grows heavy with anticipation, the forests turn an impossible shade of emerald, and the clouds descend to embrace the hills in a shifting, ethereal dance. As a travel curator, my greatest joy is weaving these raw, untamed elements of nature with the refined comforts of luxury travel.

Recently, the Curtain Call team and I had the privilege of leading four wonderful couples through the “Abode of Clouds.” What unfolded was a storybook journey of camaraderie, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable moments.

Fading into the Mist

One of my favorite memories from this trip perfectly encapsulates the wild romance of Meghalaya. We found ourselves climbing the wet, age-worn stone steps of the old Welsh cemetery—a quiet, historic place that felt as though it had witnessed a thousand whispered tales. The pre-monsoon weather had wrapped the entire hillside in a thick, swirling fog. All of us, bundled up in our long raincoats, looked like a fellowship of wizards slowly fading into the mist with every step we took upward.

Then, just as we reached the top, the magic happened. The mist began to lift, not all at once, but in tantalizing pockets, creating windows through the white veil. Through these layers of mist, the town of Cherrapunjee slowly revealed itself like a painting coming to life. First, the sharp steeple of a local church pierced the clouds. Then, a solitary water tank emerged, followed by the bright pop of a red-colored cottage perched on the neighboring hill. Finally, as the fog parted further, we caught sight of a distant waterfall plunging into the valley far, far below us. We stood there in awed silence, watching the landscape breathe.

The Contrast: Raw Nature and Curated Comfort

In a terrain as dramatic and unpredictable as Northeast India, true luxury is the ability to experience this raw nature without sacrificing comfort. How often do you get to walk up a misty hill and discover exquisite ground orchids blooming at your feet? How often do you get to walk not just to a waterfall, but behind its roaring curtain of water? These are visceral, awe-inspiring encounters.

Yet, when the weather turns in a heartbeat—one moment bathed in sunshine, the next engulfed in rain and mist—you need your comforts. At Curtain Call, we believe that the simplest things, when meticulously curated, go a long way.

We ensured our journeys across the winding mountain roads were seamless. With only three guests per spacious luxury car, everyone had the room to stretch out and watch the dramatic weather unfold through the windows. Our drivers were nothing short of extraordinary, offering helpful hands and warm smiles at every turn.

Our choice of accommodations was designed to be sanctuaries of elegance. Guest feedback continually highlighted the sheer scale of the properties. As one guest chuckled, the luxury rooms were so expansive that “you could actually put another entire family in there.” After a day of exploring ancient living root bridges and misty cemeteries, retreating to these vast, beautifully appointed suites was a daily indulgence.

Evenings were celebrated at lovely, upscale restaurants, where the true luxury of travel was shared over exquisite meals, fine wine, and the warm laughter of our group.

A Symphony of Good Company

Ultimately, a journey is defined by the people you share it with. This trip was a beautiful reminder of why I do what I do. The camaraderie among the four couples was the true heartbeat of the experience.

Reading the messages from our guests as the journey concluded filled my heart with immense gratitude:

“Thank You Julie and Curtain Call for a wonderful visit to the abode of the clouds! Truly memorable experiences, in great company, and very good arrangements. Really a fun group and a fun trip!”

“Julie & Curtain Call team… wonderful trip, excellent planning, superb experiences and of course, a great group – thank you!”

“Many thanks Julie for a superb trip and curating a group that made the trip even more memorable. Let’s plan our next one… 😄”

The Art of Curation

A curated journey is not about chasing the fanciest or grandest experiences. Rather, it is a thoughtful combination of authentic, real moments woven together with expert knowledge and insider insights.

It is about knowing which hidden paths lead to the most breathtaking views, which local restaurants serve the most genuine flavors, and which moments—whether climbing a misty cemetery or discovering ground orchids—will stay with you long after you return home.

Most of what makes a journey truly memorable is not the luxury of the accommodations or the prestige of the restaurants, though those certainly enhance the experience. It is the authenticity.

It is standing behind a waterfall like a wizard, in awe, mist spraying you and the rock behind you, and in delight, the thunderous sound of water falling in full force sounds like music to my ears. It is the laughter shared over dinner with newfound friends. It is the expert guidance that transforms a simple walk into a profound encounter with nature and history.

We came as travelers seeking the beauty of Meghalaya, but as we walked through the mist and shared stories over candlelit dinners, we left as friends. That is the true magic of a curated journey—not what you see, but how deeply you experience it, and who you experience it with.

So pack your bags, the clouds of Meghalaya are calling.
